Faculty Resources

Below are a list of resources compiled with faculty in mind, including syllabus blurbs for each of our tutoring centers, as well as articles and other literature about the benefits of tutoring. We have also provided forms for recommending your students to apply to become a tutor.

Syllabus Blurbs

Below are several examples of syllabus blurbs to introduce your students to the various Tutoring Services on campus. These are suggestions or reference points, you are welcome to change the wording as best fits your needs and style.

Tutoring Center

(General I): I encourage you to use the Center for Academic Excellence’s Tutoring Center (PML 109) for course-specific tutoring or to get help with test preparation, study skills, and time management. The Tutoring Center is staffed by Academic Peer Tutors who are trained by CAE staff and vetted by faculty, so you know you are receiving accurate and skilled tutoring. Tutors are available to meet online or in-person, and all services are free to students. For a list of the courses we currently offer tutoring for, visit the “CAE Tutoring Center” page. To book an appointment with a tutor, visit “Book a Tutoring Session.”

(General II): Do you need help better managing your coursework?  Visit the Tutoring Center (PML 109). Tutoring is a free service for students, and you can receive help with a specific course, time management, study skills, or test preparation. Whether you’re in a tough spot right now, or just need some guidance, our Academic Peer Tutors are trained by the CAE and vetted by faculty to help. For a list of the courses we currently offer tutoring for, visit the “CAE Tutoring Center” page. To book an appointment with a tutor, visit “Book a Tutoring Session.”

(Required Visit): You’ll be required to visit the Tutoring Center (PML 109) at least once this semester. This is an opportunity to clarify concepts you are having trouble with, or to gain better insights in how to approach your work in my class. The CAE Tutoring Center offers free tutoring for specific courses across disciplines, as well as time management, study skills, and test preparation. For a list of the courses we currently offer tutoring for, visit the “CAE Tutoring Center” page. To book an appointment with a tutor, visit “Book a Tutoring Session.”

(Online classes): Online courses don’t rule out the support offered by the CAE’s Tutoring Center. Our Academic Peer Tutors offer free online tutoring sessions for specific courses or general student skills, such as time management, study skills, or test preparation. Online tutoring takes place via WC Online. For a list of the courses we currently offer tutoring for, visit the “CAE Tutoring Center” page. To book an appointment with a tutor, visit “Book a Tutoring Session.”

Writing Center

The Writing Center has its own website with available Syllablurbs here.

Communication Lab

(General): I encourage you to use the University’s Communication Lab for your speaking projects. Lab Assistants will look over any part of your speech/presentation and give you feedback, letting you know what is working well (and why) and what might not be working so well (and why). Lab Assistants will watch you practice the speech, record your speech, as well as give you constructive criticism.  You can meet with a Lab Assistant either in person or via Zoom.  Use the online scheduler to easily book your appointment. The Communication Lab is located in 1101 Barnett Hall.
