Overrides Forms and Registration Errors
We academic advisors in the Center for Academic Excellence don’t control course overrides, but some individual departments use override request forms to streamline student requests. We’ve compiled them below.
- Business Administration and Accounting Override Request Form
- School of Business Application (Application to Enroll in Upper-level BSAD and ACCT classes)
- Business Administration Minor Application
- Chemistry Wait List Priority Form
- Health and Exercise Science Wait List Priority Form
- Math, Computer Science, and Statistics Override Request Form
Override Reference Guide
For a guide to each department’s override policies, see the table below.
Department |
Override Process |
Agricultural Science |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. Include name, major, class (year at Truman), expected graduation date, type of override being requested, reason for wishing to take this class (e.g. major requirement, for my learning plan, as an elective because of interest in vet school, etc.), and any other explanatory information about your request. |
Biology |
Students should use waitlists. If the student has an exceptional need, student can contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they want. |
Business/Accounting |
Student fills out this form. This is for exceptional needs only. If a student does not have an exceptional need, the student should plan on taking this course a different semester. |
Chemistry |
Student should use waitlists. If they have an exceptional need, they may also fill out this form. |
Classical & Modern Languages (CML) |
If the student has an exceptional need, student should contact the department chair (Dr. Danion Doman: ddoman@truman.edu) |
Communication |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. |
Communication Disorders |
Student should contact the department chair (Dr. Amy Teten: ateten@truman.edu) |
Computer Science |
Student fills out this form. This is for exceptional needs only. If a student does not have an exceptional need, the student should use the waitlist process. |
Economics |
The economics department generally handles overrides at the level of the faculty member, especially for capacity overrides. Some prerequisite overrides may need the involvement of the chair, as those can be trickier. First year student written explanations as to why they MUST have particular classes/sections in particular semesters are rarely compelling, except possibly for our majors. For non-majors there are really not legitimate needs to get into pretty much any of our courses urgently for first year students. |
English |
Students should use waitlists. If a student has an exceptional need (graduating and needs a seat) he or she should contact the Department Chair. |
Health & Exercise Science |
Student should get on the waitlist for the course they are wanting. If they have an exceptional need, they may also fill out this form. |
History |
Students should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting (email is fine). They will need to provide information regarding why they need this course in particular, why this semester (unless it is a topics course that is not often offered). If the course is major restricted, the student will need to wait until after freshman registration to see if seats are available, and we will not routinely allow nonmajors and nonminors into HIST 211/212/313/314. History majors should complete HST 211 and 212 in their first year – if sections are full, advise them to contact professor for a capacity override. |
Justice Systems |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. |
Math |
Student fills out this form. This is for exceptional needs only. If a student does not have an exceptional need, the student should use the waitlist process. |
Music |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. |
Nursing |
NU 185 – no overrides NU 250 or 310 – student should contact the instructor of record for the course. |
Philosophy/Religion |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. |
Physics |
Physics leaves capacity and prereq overrides in the hands of the individual teachers. Students should approach the individual professors of the classes they want. |
Political Science and International Relations |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. |
Psychology |
No overrides for first & second year students. Juniors & seniors should contact the department chair (Dr. Robert Tigner: rtigner@truman.edu) |
Society & Environment |
Student should contact the specific faculty member who is the instructor of record for the course they are wanting. If they do not get a response, they may contact the department chair (Dr. Amber Johnson: ajohnson@truman.edu). Encourage the student to include as much information as possible (name, ID, CRN wanted and/or day/time wanted, reason for override). |
Statistics |
Student fills out this form. This is for exceptional needs only. If a student does not have an exceptional need, the student should use the waitlist process. |
Registration Errors
If you encounter an error while attempting to register in a course, check the Registrar Offices’ guide on “Resolving Registration Errors.” Our academic advisor can also assist you in determining your next steps when it comes to resolving registration issues.
